Arriving To An Office Filled With Red Bull

red bullThere are a few things that help us run from day to day here at RustyBrick. One is caffeine the other is a good sense of humor. Today both of these things came together and combined into something great, a prank on Barry.

First a little bit of back story. A few of us in the office don't drink coffee and/or just prefer Red Bull. We drink quite a lot of it... exhibit a: The Wall of Red Bull Cans. That little wall grabbed someone at Red Bull's attention and scored us some Free Red Bull :)

That wall was completed back in January of 2009. Ever since then we have still be collecting cans and just waiting for the right opportunity to do something cool with them. This week Barry was out of town at SES Chicago (recap here at Search Engine Roundtable) so we decided to fill his office with the cans. Overall I think we had around 1500 cans, they definitely didn't take up as much of the office as we had initially hoped, but the results were still pretty good. Here is a video of us setting his office:

Here are a few pictures of the office after we have completed the setup. You will notice a few tweaks after the end of the video, we moved things around for a little better effect.

You will also notice a laptop that we set up on his desk facing the door. We set up a script on the laptop to start recording video at 6 am so that we could catch Barry's reaction when he saw his office. Here it is:

UPDATE: The first 10 seconds of this video is pure darkness as we wait for Barry to open the door.

Hope you all enjoyed that prank as much as I enjoyed drinking all that Red Bull :)

Just to let everyone know, Barry was a very good sport about this... only 2 of the employees involved were fired.

Barry why the "crazy, wild and nuts" reaction!

It's customary to laugh and say "You got me!"

People who know me, know that is the biggest emotional response I have ever displayed.

They just don't know it yet. ;-)

Is there a rider in the RustyBrick hiring paperwork that says, "all empty cans of Red Bull are to be retained for future shenanigans"? Well done. We "newspapered" a co-worker's office a few months ago. His reaction was much less stoic.

I would have reacted quicker, but my monitor was returned and I looked at it from behind to see it. I honestly did not suspect this at all. But I did notice the green light on the computer monitor, so I knew it was capturing me.

I liked the way you moved quickly to deal with the webcam. Suggests to me that you were half suspecting something like this :)

Barry's reaction perfectly explains why they need so much Red Bull in that office.
