Next iPhone Is Named iPhone 4G

Published February 10, 2011

iPhone 4GI have no idea why so many people are assuming the name of the new iPhone coming out in June will be named the iPhone 5? Why would Apple name this phone the iPhone 5?

Let's look at the naming history of the phone.

2007 was the year of the original iPhone. It wasn't named the iPhone 3, just the iPhone. It did not support AT&T's 3G network, it only worked over Edge (2G).

2008 I got the next iPhone, this one supported the 3G network. Apple named it the iPhone 3G. The speed rocked and I was a very happy camper. I didn't have 3G in my area until a few week after I got the iPhone 3G. But it was a world of difference.

2009 the iPhone speed got faster, not the network speed, but the device speed. They named that device the iPhone 3GS, S was for speed.

2010 was the big leap from 3 to 4. I got my iPhone 4 and it wasn't any faster in terms of device or network speed, but it was a revamped design and had better features.

Okay, so you see, from iPhone to iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4. What is the next logical number? 5? No! The iPhone 4 does not support AT&T's 4G network but AT&T (and Verizon) are pushing their 4G networks big time this year. In June 2011, Apple will release the iPhone 4G, not the iPhone 5.

I suspect the iPhone 4G will look pretty much the same as the iPhone 4 but fix some design flaws. It will also support one major thing, AT&Ts (and Verizons) 4G networks. I can't wait!

So why is everyone calling the next iPhone the iPhone 5?
