Slow Windows Machine

Published February 20, 2004
A few days ago, one of my wife's friends called me with a computer issue. Her machine was taking a very long time to load and wasn't working very well. She has a 1.8 GHz Dell running Windows XP. She was also getting these annoying pop-ups. So I went by and did my usual "slow machine maintenance" routine. Basically, I did the following. Removed all the services she didn't need from the taskbar Ran the following software: Ad-Aware Spy-bot HijackThis Windowwasher (program that cleans IE temp files and other stuff) This made absolutely no difference. It was still taking an average of 4 minutes to load the user settings. So I took a look at her application log and saw the culprit. She was running both Norton Personal Firewall as well as McAfee Personal Firewall and each one of these was stopping the other one from working properly. So I removed, McAfee and the machine is now running superbly.
