Are Press Releases Worth It?

Published September 7, 2017

When we announced that ShulCloud reached its 613th active customer, I wanted to get the word out.   Typically when I want to do that, I share the news on social media and sometimes hit up, via email, some reporters I know that cover Jewish news or local news.  I hate emailing reporters, because being a reporter on the search news space, I know how many emails I get, and I am sensitive to being respectful to other people's email inboxes.

That being said, I decided this time to just do the social media shares and for the first time in ages, do an official news release with a distribution company.  We selected PR Newswire because they have a pretty good reputation and I wanted to give them a shot.  So we pushed the release through their normal channels about 5 weeks ago.

Here are the statistics they shared with us just a week ago on the success of this news release:

  • 117 Pickups
  • 83.2 Million Potential Audience
  • 164 Release Views & Hits

Here is the email they sent us with these statistics:

Here is the breakdown by source type and industry:

Ultimately, the news around did not really get us that much attention.  Of course, there can be many reasons for that including timing, the content of the news, the channel we chose to promote the news, the weather or really tons of other factors.  But overall, I was not too happy with the results of this release.

Forget any links, that was not the goal.  The goal was to get attention from the media about hitting this milestone, specifically the Jewish media.

I think going forward, I am going to stick with my email list, which I rarely ever use, and social media shares.

Do you have success with press releases these days?
