Visualizing iPhone Siddur Users Around The Globe

Published May 6, 2011

Yesterday afternoon Google blogged about a visualization tool they created to show you where in the world Googlers were searching and which languages those searches were in. They also announced that they open sourced the platform to allow any developer use the globe feature. So I asked our developers around 2pm yesterday, who wants to map our iPhone Siddur users on the globe and Andy took to the challenge. By last night, he had a working map.

We decided to show the past week of data of our iPhone Siddur users using the Siddur. The longer the bars protruding from the globe, the more people using it in that city. The colors show what time of the day they are more likely to use it in that region. You can view the live map at our Siddur Geo Map page. It is updated nightly and shows the past week's data - it is anonymized.

What I find interesting is how certain regions are more likely to use the iPhone Siddur in the morning (i.e. morning services) as other regions are more likely to use it in the evening (i.e. evening services). But the best part is that people are praying with it all day long and all around the globe!

Go ahead, play with the interactive globe. You can spin it, zoom in and let it rotate. FYI, it only works in modern browsers like Google Chrome, latest Firefox and so on. It uses Google's code and HTML5, Canvas, SVG, and WebGL.
