I Often Take Out The Trash

Published August 3, 2017

With all the pizza we eat here amongst our growing company, we make a lot of trash.  We don't print much paper, we literally design software that makes companies paperless and we do practice what we preach.  So our only real trash is food items, for the most part.

We also only hire an outside cleaning service once a week, because we use a Roomba to do a nightly sweep.  The Roomba does an okay job cleaning the floor and then once a week, we get a deep clean.  Then the other days, we need people here to take out the trash.

For the most part, I was the only one here who took out the trash.  But now there are some anonymous folks here who take it out without telling me and to do me a favor.  I do like to take out the trash, but often I am so busy, I need to just get up, walk away and do it. Taking out the trash really gives me a good 10 minute break to think about other things and it gets me up, out of my chair and a short outdoor walk to the big dumpster at the other side of our building.

Taking out the trash for me is not just something that I do to clear my head and get a bit of exercise but also to build a culture in our company that there is no job too big or small for anyone in the company.  The concept of "this is not my job" does not exist at RustyBrick and that message comes from the top down, or the garbage man down.
